As we grow and flourish through our 20s, 30s, and 40s, our birthday celebrations and parties take on distinctly different meanings.
In our 20s, it’s mostly about “girls just want to have fun.” It’s a time that’s ripe with friends’ weddings, children coming into the world, and parties with friends who are everything to us.
When we reach our 30s, our significant others and married friends and families take the spotlight and we spend more time and effort with them. And in many ways, it’s during this decade that we drop from first to second on our own priority lists.
But when the 40s arrive, we reshape those priorities. We trim our friend lists to a manageable number and spend time on the things that matter most. And if you’re in your 40s, live in NYC and are single like me, it’s a time to ramp up the fun dynamic by at least a factor of 10. It’s time to celebrate each decade lived and look forward to life’s next milestones.
My birthday celebration, New York style
Birthdays are extra, extra special to me — and my extra special friends know it. During this year’s birthday month, which is July, my friends helped celebrate me in extraordinary, creative, and thoughtful ways. I’m grateful for friendships that will endure and grow stronger through shared experiences. My month-long celebration started when:
A day in SoHo thanks to a friend who took me to lunch at Antique Garage. It was her ingenious idea to have six cupcakes from the Bake Shop delivered to the restaurant. Every cupcake was a favorite flavor and the birthday cake arrangement allowed me to make a wish and blow out the candles. And then:
The 2019 Celebration of Z came to a momentous conclusion with a dinner party at my favorite Italian restaurant, Il Divo, where several friends gathered to close a bang with a bang!
Because birthdays are so very special to me, I explored interesting and fun ways to celebrate each decade:
For your 20s:
For your 30s:
Check out an amusement park and ride the biggest roller coaster there.
Visit a botanical garden. Invite friends and their children to enjoy the gardens and if you’re lucky, a butterfly garden.
Take a road trip! Bond with friends on the open road by going someplace you’ve always wanted to visit.
For your 40s:
Go all out!
Take the time you need to plan an event, even if it’s to celebrate with a few friends at home, or at a favorite hangout or restaurant.
Plan an extravaganza that celebrates who you have become.
Share with me one of your most memorable birthdays. Where did you go, or what did you do?
